Flood Middle School Students Showcase Project at State Capitol

On April 1st, four 7th grade students from the Flood Middle School in Stratford showcased their talent at the 14th Annual Tech Expo held at the Legislative Office Building at the State Capitol in Hartford.
Flood Middle School was one of only 30 schools statewide that were chosen to participate in the tech expo. It was the first time Flood Middle School students were selected to display a project at the annual event.

In an integration of technology and world geography, the Flood Middle School students created “anti-commercials” (Public Service Announcements) intended to persuade Latin American audiences to reject fast foods in favor of their traditional diets.

As they put together their display, the students learned how physical geography influences traditional diets in rural Ecuador and suburban Mexico.

By deconstructing commercials, the students concluded that less developed countries are increasingly influenced by American marketing and argued that fast food companies should not market their products to Latin Americans.

The tech expo showcases projects put together by students from schools throughout Connecticut. The projects are intended to show how technology can affect learning.

The exposition gives participating schools an opportunity to demonstrate to state legislators how students in Connecticut schools use technology to support learning.

The students’ project was developed by Sara Kaluzynski, the students’ Social Studies teacher, and Flood Middle School Library Media Specialist Chris Barlow.
